In the latest set of results from the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) we’ve seen a bounce back from certain categories, sufficient decreases in the Kitchen & Bathrooms and large growth in Timber & Joinery and Landscaping.
With a full UK lockdown in November and for the majority in December too it is no surprise to see light-side (Kitchen & Bathroom) categories figures decreasing. With showrooms closed and only virtual visits allowed has had a massive impact on this sector with “annual decreases of -20.2% and -18.1%” (BMBI, 2021).
Surprisingly, Plumbing & Heating Q4 2020 shows they were only up 0.4% up on 2019 but saw a huge increase of 11.9% on Q3 of the previous quarter. However, when full year sales were compared they were down 13.2% on 2019.
From a positive viewpoint other categories have seen huge growth vs 2019 with “Timber & Joinery and Landscaping respectively increasing by 12.7% and 22.9% in value against Q4 2019.” (BMBI, 2021). In addition, the Heavy Building Materials category also saw an increase vs 2019 of 4.3%.
It is clear that it will take time to repair the damage COVID has done to the economy but in the next few months, we hope that with the governments roadmap now well documented and vaccine numbers steadily climbing week by week we’re looking at the light at the end of this long tunnel.
